THE WEEKEND WRAP - BROUGHT TO YOU BY MILLSY PROPERTY MAINTENANCE
01 Jul 19

The Wrap this week is proudly brought to you by Millsy Property Maintenance, for all your property Maintenance needs, call Junior on 0418 535 741 and of course don’t forget to tell him you’re a Rooster….

Yet another big weekend of Footy and Netball across the NFNL with our Roosters at the forefront as usual.

On Friday night the netballers took on Kilmore 5 in what ultimately turned into a classic shootout. From one end of the court to the other the ball shot up and down and when the dust settled, the teams could not be separated, a 28 all draw, one for the archives!

Saturday dawned and we headed to Bill Lawry oval, quite appropriate really with the Aussies currently doing so well in the old dart – not that Bill would have been much of a one day player in his day, more the slow and steady type.. I digress. The 19’s started proceedings as they took on Lower Plenty and sad to say the boys were never really in the contest, beaten by a much better team on the day going down in the end by 54 points. That sees them drop out of the top 5. The boys will look to turn it around at Hurstbridge next Saturday.

Next up the Reserves and I’m happy to say did get to play as Northcote Park were able to field a side this week. While it was not the Cricket score some may have been expecting and let’s be honest, there would not have been much cricket played on Saturday, the boys got the job done in trying conditions, recording a 4th straight win, set up early with a strong opening quarter. The boys kept it going in the difficult conditions to record another good win. Scotty and the boys are humming along nicely – big challenge next week.

The big boys then took to the field looking to continue their own surge up the ladder. To say by now the conditions had taken a turn for the worse would be an understatement. This would be a battle of attrition, who wanted it the most? l We Did… 4 on the trot and with favourable results at other grounds we now find ourselves sitting in 5th spot on the Ladder what an amazing turn-around from just a month ago. The game was tough and hard. We jumped out early, they fought back, we steadied and kicked away to come out 38 point winners in near darkness. The evenness of this competition is amazing this year, our boys are showing some fight, and the fight gets no bigger than the unbeaten Greensborough, next week.. One not to be missed.

To the juniors – we’ll cover the home games first up, with our under 9 Blue starting the day’s activities on the top oval taking on Research. The rebels were a few down on numbers so we kindly offered some assistance to ensure all got a game. There was a pair of twins in opposing jumpers going for it hammer and tong at one point, not sure who won that battle or the game as we don’t keep score of course, but everyone was a winner in this one. The under 10’s then took on that other mob who call themselves Roosters… West Ivanhoe, well we know there is only one Rooster in town and so it proved to be as our wonderful little team showcased all the skills this wonderful game has to offer in a great team performance.

The under 13’s started the action on the hallowed main oval with Montmorency in attendance. Monty are one slick outfit. We gave it our best shot getting a great start, with the team actually taking the lead into the first break. It could have been more for a bit of luck, but alas the quality of Monty got the better of the team by games end. The Monty coach said to the team after the game, the improvement he’s seen in our side was fantastic and this was one of the harder games they have played all year. Well done Troopers! The Legend was a proud coach back in the rooms, if Only my Blues could play with this much passion and commitment he was heard to mutter under his breath….. MURPHY.…..

The 14 Girls had a home game down at Darebin’s A.H.Capp reserve against Northcote looking to make it back to back wins. They duly did the charge is on! Just one game out of the top four now after a stunning win on the weekend and with the game in the balance at ¾ time the Messiah called for one last effort, to dig deep, play as a team and bring home the win, and what a last quarter by our young ladies. 4 unanswered goals had us singing a song or two thanks to a 24 point win. These young ladies have improved so much as the year has gone on, well done to you all…..

The 14 boys hosted Wallan on the big ground and sustained the roll with an emphatic victory. Wallan provided some stiff competition early on, but our boys kicked into gear as the game progressed and recorded a very comfortable win at the final siren. Its tight at the top of the table in the 14 green with three clear standouts, Frank will be looking to keep the boys on track after holidays for a tilt at the Holy Grail…… Keep a lid on it, not like the lounge room Sunday night… MURPHY!!!

The under 16s concluded the home junior action taking on Yarrambat for the 3rd time this year. The teams are getting very familiar with each other, unfortunately the result was familiar also with Yarrambat getting the win yet again. They are the team to beat this year as the 9-1 record would indicate. Our boys made them work for it this week the 56 point margin at the end not really reflective off the effort and commitment delivered on the day.

On the Road the under 9 red team headed to Northcote for a clash that had everything you could wish for in a game of football – high marks, long goals, crunching tackles, zig zagging runs, bone jarring bumps, at the final siren, the scoreboard read 0.0 to 0.0, hard to believe I know with all that action. Footy was the winner as always.

The Under 11’s paid a visit to South Morang, looking for a win to consolidate our spot in the top 4. They came away with the 4 points safely tucked away in the kit bag, thanks to a terrific team effort that overpowered the kids from South Morang. Terrific team effort with just 17 on the day in tough conditions, no bench, but lots of Rooster Spirit – no wonder Brad had a pep in his step.

The most anticipated clash of the day happened out at Panton Hills ground where Research hosted our under 15’s in the end it was a 24 point win to Research. Iit was tight at ¾ time with less than a goal between the teams, but they got us in the end. Phil was heard to mutter we need to play our game for 4 quarters, he’s already looking to taking them on again…. Sunday 4th August, Our Place, lock it in…..

Finishing up the junior action the Under 17’s were on the road at South Morang. This looked to be a tight tussle between two even teams and so it proved. We roared out of the gates to have a comfortable lead at the first break only to have then storm back into contention by half time. A solid third quarter had us up by 16 going to the last. Would it be enough ?? You betcha… they came and came but we held firm to record a well – deserved victory by 11 points in a great contest.

To round it all off, the senior women had a home clash with Bundoora. After our earlier battle this year, this was going to be rough and rugged! They are a pretty resilient bunch our ladies – as we all know Roosters don’t take a backward step. None on display in this one! It was close at ¾ time but in a tough hard fought affair we blew em away in the last “And we’ll be singing when we’re winning”… 26 points the final margin, How did we do it? Why Easy of Course.

That’s a wrap on a busy weekends action I’m sure you will agree! A bit quieter this week with the Juniors enjoying the final break of the year before finals – for those lucky enough to be heading that way. Enjoy your break Rooster families, be safe and we look forward to the run home.

No rest for the wicked though, as the seniors plough on. Saturday has the 19 boys tripping out to Hurstbridge, from 9.40. On Sunday its a couple of Massive games at Home. Yes SUNDAY, the big boys take on Greensborough in the seniors and reserves. They are yet to lose in either grade, that’s soon to end…. The Senior women also have a massive away clash with Montmorency -More detail on all those games later in the week.
