MATCH REPORTS 2017 - THE "AROUND THE GROUNDSMAN" FINALS WEEK 1 6/8/17

THE "AROUND THE GROUNDSMAN" FINALS WEEK 1 6/8/17

Well what a cracking weekend of Finals action for our Roosters.

We had 5 sides in action over the weekend at 4 different venues.

The action started on Saturday at Bill Lawry Oval with our Senior Ladies in action against Darebin. It was an historic day for the club and the NFL with the inaugural finals series kicking off, having finished the home and away in second spot on the ladder.

With an Injury list as long as your arm, Polly picked his best available side and let the ladies do the rest, a fantastic 4 quarter effort had us on the right side of the ledger at the final siren which was a fantastic result. No time to rest on our laurels as VU Western Spur rested up on the weekend and await us next week with a Grand Final spot on the line. The finals series now moves to Preston City Oval on Saturday at 11.55, Get along and cheer our team on to a Grand Final berth.

On Sunday our under 13’s and 16 Girls headed out to Panton Hill. First up the 13’s took on Mill Park, now these are clearly the two best sides in the division, With our boys going in undefeated, I guess you could say if there is a right time to drop a game then this was it. Mill Park played a great game and came out on top, but due to finishing on top the boys have the double chance and will front up next week against Ressa with a spot in the big one up for grabs.
Congrats to Trent Stavrou who played his 100th game on the weekend.

As for the 16 girls, Monty proved to be too strong on the day, posting a comprehensive victory, but as with the 13’s by virtue of the top two finish, a second chance is at hand and we’ll take on Yarrambat this weekend with a spot in the Grand final on the line and another shot at the unbeaten Mont. Heads up girls get over this weekend and what better way ruin a party than to knock them off in the GF.

Our under 14’s took on Mernda at Thomastown and after a tight first half the boy’s took control with a dominant second half performance to run Mernda off their legs and secure a spot in the Grand Final and a well-deserved weeks res. , Rest funny word that with Gino in charge! Training might be full on during the break? Or he could take it easy on them? Either way, the boys are back in the big dance and one win away from going back to back.

That left the under 17’s who ventured out to a very windy Mernda to take on top of the table Kilmore. This was a cracking affair! Kilmore kicked with the breeze in the first quarter, and our boys produced perhaps the best quarter of footy they have played all year to be less than a goal down. We then took the half time lead and hung on to that at ¾ time. In a frantic last quarter Kilmore hit the front and moved 10 points clear late on, but the never say die attitude if these boys came to the fore and they produced some brilliant football to rest back the lead and ice the game on the siren to record a 12 point win and book a spot in the big one. I dare say it will be Kilmore again in two weeks’ time, so rest up boys and get ready to go to battle again on Sunday Week.

Also congrats to Sean Shorten on his 150th game. Iit was a blinder, well played Sean!

That’s a playing wrap for the weekend. So we have two side having booked a spot in the grand final and our 13’s and 16 Girls will get the chance to join them if they can win this week. The senior women will also be playing for a spot in the Grand Final – if you can get out and support the they would appreciate it.

We again hosted Finals on the weekend and will be again over the next couple of weeks. Please, if you can help to with cooking a bbq, setting up, cleaning up the ground etc, it would be greatly appreciated, the usual faces were in attendance on Sunday, the same people who week in week out give their time to get Your kids on the footy field. It would be great to get some help from others so the work does not continue to fall on the same people.

It takes a lot of time and commitment to run our footy club, and hosting these finals is a great way to build some funds to contribute towards some fantastic proposed building upgrades to our facilities that will benefit everyone, so Please if you can help this Sunday or Sunday week let us know.

On Saturday we hosted the 70th anniversary of the club, it was a terrific roll up of older and newer faces, the rooms looked fantastic decked out with all the old premiership flags and the old photos on display in the back rooms certainly brought back some memories for the old timers, some have aged gracefully and some not so much.

The big boys are back in action this weekend with two massive games coming up, firstly away to second placed Bundoora then a home clash with top of the table Macleod. The finals are just around the corner and a win this weekend is vital to our top three chances. So again if you can, get to Bundoora to show your support.

And that is wrap for the weekend, fixture for our two junior teams in action this week will be out soon – hopefully. The senior women are Saturday at Preston City Oval and the seniors at Bundoora, get along to some or all if you can.

Enjoy the week.
