THE "AROUND THE GROUNDSMAN" ROUND 2 2017

Wow what a weekend of Footy.

Let’s start on Saturday, this week when club stalwart Brad Sanderson broke the club all time games record pulling on the Red White and Blue for the 409th time. 
What a fantastic achievement by Sando, it was great to see previous record holder Ken Louder in attendance to hand over the baton as the boys took on Recently promoted Hurstbridge in the main game, the boys ensured Sando celebrated the milestone with a hard fought win to make it a 3-0 start to the season.
While the Reserves also maintained an unbeaten record with a comfortable victory. 
U19’s had the bye as Hurstbridge do not have an under 19’s team this year. 
Next Saturday it’s away to MacLeod in what promises to be an absolute blockbuster. 

On to Sunday and what a packed day at JE Moore park with 8 games of footy over the two grounds….
The action on the top oval started with the Under 9 Yellow taking on Monty this is our youngest group and in fantastic conditions the team put a very spirted display, 
Next up the 10’s took on Bundoora Park, this was another ripping contents between two evenly matched sides, now we don’t keep score in the under 10’s as you know, but I’m fairly sure I heard some singing, not good singing, but some singing none the less. 

The top oval concluded with the U12’s taking on Thomastown, after a bright start by the team, The Bears came home a bit too strong in the end but it was a very encouraging display by the team, under New Coach David “Snowy” Snow. A big thanks to Snowy for stepping in to take over the coaching reigns at short notice, and also a big thank you to Graeme for all his efforts with this great little team last year and over the preseason.

The big ground played host to Under 9 Red taking on Bundoora Park. This is the older of our two under 9’s and they put on a cracking display of team footy. Wwatching the skills on display you would have thought you were watching a much higher age group….

Next up was an absolute thriller with the Under 11’s taking on Laurimar, trailing at every change and by 14 points at the final change, a gripping final quarter saw our mighty Roosters hit the front late in the game and hang on for a 1 point win. Perhaps Coach Chas could take his troops down to Icon Park and teach them a thing or two???
Sticking with the thriller theme, the Under 14’s then took on Kilmore in a see sawing contest there was never much in it all day and when the final siren sounded there was nothing to separate the teams, the dreaded draw with the teams locked together on the scoreboard, well done to both sides. 

I think Michael Jackson may well have been at JE Moore Park in spirt on Sunday as yet another il-clasico played out as the Under 17’s also took on Kilmore, the game ebbed and flowed throughout but Kilmore looked to have taken a decisive advantage at ¾ time with a 22 point lead, but a 7 goal to 2 final term saw our boys storm home and grab the win, by 10 points. Well done to Mitchell Crapper who played his 150th game for the club – a great effort! It was terrific to see the boys carry him off at the end. It was also a great birthday present for Coach Matty Sleeman, hope you had a great day Matthew. 

The action packed day ended with our Senior Women taking the field to play VU Western Spur in the official Round 1 clash of the NFL women’s senior completion. In keeping with the spirt of the day this one was also in the balance deep into the last quarter before a late goal to the Spurs settled a tense affair, Well done to our Ladies on a hard fought contest. 
That wrapped up an unbelievable day of footy at home. 

On the road, the under 13’s had the local Derby as they made the short trip to Crispe park to take on Reservoir. My spies tell me this was a very entertaining affair with our Roosters getting to sing the song at the end of a very satisfying win. 
The under 15’s headed out to South Morang, to say this was a one sided contest would be an understatement, the boys racked up a cricket score in recording their first win for the year. 
The 16 girls round out the day with a trip to Laurimar, I didn’t get to this one but speaking with a few who did they advised yet another Thriller to keep with the theme of the day… Our girls came up 4 points short, but lost no friends in the process.

Thursday Night meals are on every week, pop in for a great feed, great company and some liquid refreshment if it takes your fancy.

Please be mindful when entering the Car park that we have Lots and Lots of Children running around, the sign say’s 10k’s please stick to that, it’s getting darker and we don’t want any accidents from people driving in like an F1 Driver. 

Another great weekend of footy, again the big boys are away next week at Macleod get along and cheer them on, the Women are away at Whitehorse on Sunday at 1.30, Dorking Road Box Hill, while the draw for the juniors will hopefully be updated shortly.
