Now it was Remiss of me last week not to mention some great acheivements by some of our Roosters. Liam McVeigh played a pivotol role in the NFNL taking the No 1 ranking in the State in the victory over the GNFL last weekend. Sam Glover was also chosen to play but got a late call up to the Collingwood VFL side on the day so missed the rep opportunity but did nothing to harm his AFL aspirations being named amongst Collingwood's best in the loss to Geelong. Well Done, Sam.
Cat O’Bryan and Michelle Millhouse represented the Women’s side, both playing starring roles. The team could not get over the line, but Cat was so good she was awarded BOG in a losing side. Only true champions can achieve that, the name Maurice Rioli springs to mind….
In the juniors we also have a few of our budding superstars picked in the NFNL rep sides. Congrats to Kanoa Rotumah for making the under 14’s, Mikalee Maroney under 15 girls, Hayden Delos, Marty Fitzgerald, Michael Inzitari and Trent Stavrou who are in the under 15 boys squads. Well done to all. Keep an eye on team app for game times if you want to go and watch some high quality games.
So last weekend we had the Miracle result in the Federal Election a win for the ages if you believe the pollster/pundits/experts (personally I’m not all that in to politics) but I do love a true underdog story, where the battler rises from the canvas to knock of the big dog. Bit like Rocky in a way. Well I’m not sure were battlers, we have been struggling a bit, but the big boy’s did put in arguably their best effort of the season and another upset appeared on the cards. Unfortunately some untimely injuries struck and the boys were not able to hold out against a high quality Heidelberg side who managed to take the win. it was good to see our Spiritual leader in Joel Mac back out on the field for his first game of the year and what a blinder he played. Also a debut senior game for Matthew Signorello in the Red, White and Blue, continuing a fine family tradition. Welcome back to the family Matt.
The focus now turns to Lower Plenty at home next weekend as we look to get our first win for the year. This really is a must win clash. Hopefully the “Ladies” who will be ruling the roost next Saturday can inspire the boys to Victory.
Better news for the Reserves who bounced back to form with a vengeance, demolishing Heidelberg to the tune of 83 points, winning every quarter in a dominate display. It was led by the young fellas in the team Bona with his 5 goals and Sando again in fine form as he again set the games benchmark for the club. Sando will have some extra company in the 400 club next week, stay tuned later in the week for more details on that one.
Meanwhile over at Greensborough in the early kick off the under 19’s did away with the slime in ruthless fashion. When the boys put the foot to the throat they don’t ease up. They showed no mercy in a 143 point shellacking that has moved them into the top 5. It will be great to have all three teams at home next weekend when the boys take on Mernda in the early game who currently sit in third. Should be a good way to kick off the day. Anyway I’m getting ahead of myself, this wrap is about the past, not the future……
Rounding out the senior side of things, the Senior Womens team made the short trip to take on the Darebin Falcons A Side.
Unfortunately we got off to a slow start, giving the Falcons the break they needed to record a hard fought victory. We pushed them all the way in a terrific team effort. A big congrats to Alyssia Delos who has moved up from the under 16’s last year, on kicking her First senior goal – a great effort.
In the Juniors both under 9’s were at home with the Blue team taking on Eltham White on the top oval, with the Red team on the big ground against Reservoir….
Wonderful contests both of them, thrills and spill everywhere, big shout out to the Red team for helping out the neighbour with some players to make sure the game went ahead. Terrific team spirit, Well played everyone.
The 10’s were also on the Big ground at home taking on Northcote Blue. Another highly entertaining affair this one. Too many highlights to mention, Footy was the true winner…
The under 11’s followed them onto the hallowed turf with Monty Black playing a visit. In an early season blockbuster, The team came up short against a very very good side. The positive for us is we have now seen the best and know the standard required to match it.
The 13’s headed up the highway to tackle the super impressive Laurimar… This was always going to be a tough encounter against a quality unit. Our kids as always tried hard showing terrific commitment from start to finish, the scoreboard not being a true reflection of the commitment shown. “Legend” was a proud coach at the final siren. Well done troopers, No blues jokes this week Legend we’ll take it easy on ya…..
Our sensational 14 girls combine headed out to Mill Park. In a quirk of the draw we only played them two weeks ago, and just like two weeks ago, our little song birds got to sing, sing, sing…. The Messiah was a very happy coach, but will no doubt have the girls in front of the big sticks at training 16 points the only knock on a great team effort. Well done girls. (7 through the middle in case you were wondering).
The 14 Boy’s travelled to Thomastown for the derby with a difference, against the combine of Ressa & Thomastown,. Now we all know if you lose to Reservoir – being the nearest neighbour that your club privileges will be revoked. I’m happy to report the team are welcome back thanks to a terrific, gritty team effort. The crew came away with the 4 points safely tucked away in the kit bag. Mission accomplished. (just for the record we would have let you back in, just glad we didn’t have to call an extraordinary meeting to agree to that).
The short straw for the day was the under 15’s, who had the late kick off in Wallan. This was a tight affair but as dusk settled over the ground, our boys had kicked clear In the final stanza to record a 6th straight win on the year. I’m sure the heaters were cranked to max for the trip home, but it’s more enjoyable with the 4 points secured. Great Job.
At home the 16’s had the company of Montmorency who shot out of the blocks to set up a handy half time lead. Our boys pulled it back to 7 points at three quarter time, but the lads in black and white proved to steady in the final quarter and took home the win, good fighting effort by our boys.
Preceedings came to a close with the 17’s going head to head with Eltham. For the most part our boys were super competitive, just the odd concentration lapse was punished and it was enough for Eltham to secure the win. The boys will look to regroup as they take on the top of the table in Research next weekend…

Enjoy your week. Go Roosters!
